I need to run something by the hive mind. I’ve got my scooter up for sale, I’m asking $1350 (hoping to actually get $1200). The reason I’m selling it, is to put the money towards buying my buddy’s Yamaha Zuma 125. I’m open to trades as well. Normally the trade offers I get are more comical than anything, and I enjoy a good joke. When I sold my Elite a few weeks ago, somebody offered me a compound bow and arrows. Yesterday I got a very reasonable offer, a ‘99 Honda Passport (Isuzu Rodeo). It has 160k miles, looks to be in pretty clean and serviceable condition, has a 3" lift, kin da ugly wheels , and supposedly everything works.
Now, I don’t want the vehicle. But I’m being offered a fully functional 4x4 in trade for a scooter, so the idea of taking it and flipping it does intrigue me. It’d also be a huge pain , and I’m up to my ass in a kitchen remodel.
What are Oppo’s thoughts?

looks clean enough to get 2-3 the amount of your scooter.

trade it then use it to run him of his scooter and reclaim that too!
hmmmm...
i think my moral compass went wonky again

I’m confused. If your goal here is to buy the Zuma, why are you taking trade offers again? Well if there’s any reason, I’d say it’s in case you come across something like this, which may net you more than a straight sale of your scooter. But you have to put in the effort. So I say, take the trade and flip the 4x4. If you’re really knee-deep in other stuff (I can relate) , then I would say cancel the trade-in option and just take what cash you can get for the scooter. Time is sometimes more precious than money.

Just from pictures, I would say that’s a 3k rig. Still more time and risk, but I think you could certainly get your money back on it.
Personally, I wouldn’t do it right now because like you, I’m in kind of a big project.

Wait, what are you using for the Gambler?
I’d say take the trade, it may be easier to flip than the scooter?

I could get 3k for the I suzu in MT easy. Seems suspicious!

One that’s an Isuzu underneath?

Normally I'd say take the Honda, but then I remember that you live in the rust belt and it almost certainly has a Swiss cheese undercarriage.

I suspect it has one ore more of these; salvage title , failing transmission, stolen . Someone could dump that in a matter of hours for 1,500 on Craigslist. Trading seems weird.

This is seems like a really good trade to take, even if you have to sit on it awhile while you’re finishing your kitchen. Of course, I also say this from the Southwest where one can buy 50 year-old cars without so much as even surface rust on suspension fasteners, so my take on old, cheap cars might be different. Out here, anything that runs and drives is at least a $1000 car, and $1500 if the A/C blows cold air at your. Add $500 for working 4x4. If this thing isn’t S wiss cheese underneath, this feels like it sells for considerably more than $1200 with a some clean up and less brotastic wheels.

Well, I’d check out the truck, at least. Perhaps someone on here would be interested in taking that off your hands for $1200...

I generally am open to trade offers in case I get a good offer like this, but also because they’re often entertaining.

Just a bit :)

My parents loved their 1994 Rodeo, but they had it for 9 years. I don’t know how well these have held up, but it seems like a fantastic offer.

Personally I would look at/drive it figuring your bottom dollar on the scoot is $1200. You could burn $1200 on a lot of other things and have nothing to show for it. Here you get a car! If it’s in half decent shape I bet you could at least double your money if you put a little elbow grease into it and relist.

this time im just suggesting one measly murder :p

Whew, I was going to say! Blegh, I’m beginning to hate my Bashan. So close, yet so far. I figured out that I had the vacuum line all screwed up, but it still won’t start now that it’s all fitted correctly. Only fires on the starting fluid then dies. Grr...

As clean as that Passport looks, I’d trade him, detail the rig, then double the price. That’s a solid $3k here in Indiana.

Trading vehicles makes me wary. Personally, I would have taken the compound bows.

Al so on the topic of interesting trade offers, I got an amusing one when I had the Bronco listed. Some guy offered a 90's focus, I asked what body style and declined when he said it was an a utomatic sedan. He then asked if I would take a wagon then, to which I said yes. He then texted me back and said nevermind, he wasn’t allowed to sell that one.
Pretty sure this dude just offered his wife's car or something for trade on a non-running 4x4.

At first I thought it was a good deal, but thinking a bit, the frame’s probably got a big hole in it. It wouldn’t hurt to check it out, but it was an issue with these. My sister used to have one that was affected that the dealer refused to fix. It may have even been a recall.
![]() 07/10/2018 at 14:39 |

It’s not as if the Passports are crazy valuable . . . I was considering buying one a couple months back that was in similar condition, minus all of the extras, for only $500. I could see someone being willing to go under market value if they really wanted a scooter and didn’t invest much in the Honda. The lift/wheels and parts are probably cheap as shit, just a forewarning.

Meanwhile, one of my exes has spotted someone in their town selling a running 250cc Jonway for a price that may as well be theft. Going to send her out to investigate.

It’s extra intere sting if you’re in the US (“ Bronco ” = reasonable guess) since the first model year for the Focus was 2000.

Specific details are hard to recall, but right after I hit publish I decided I was pretty sure they were actually Escorts but didn't care enough to go back and edit. I wish I had saved that conversation.
![]() 07/10/2018 at 17:28 |

I kinda figured that wa s the case, but my CL exper ience can’t rule out someone not knowing the year and/or model of car they own...

I’d be afraid of the transmission. That’s about the milage that the trans on my sister’s Rodeo started going. That was a 2400 repair. I think the car started rusting apart about 6 months later,
![]() 07/10/2018 at 18:12 |

The trans and rust underneath would be my big concerns. I just keep thinking, "Why would someone offer a full functional 4x4 in trade for a scooter? Something must be wrong with it."
